Girl Crazy

June Allyson's first feature film role was in this film. Girl Crazy served as a screen tests of sorts and as something to do while she was making Best Foot Forward.

Girl Crazy was a vehicle for Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. Rooney played a playboy who haunted nightclubs for all the girls he could man handle. June Allyson sings a number "Treat Me Rough" during which she pulls Mickey on stage with her.

"Treat Me Rough" is truly a standout number in Girl Crazy. Her facial expressions and delivery are priceless. Though only a specialty, from my perspective you can tell June would become very successful at MGM.

Lines to remember:

"Treat me rough, pinch my cheek...kiss and hug and squeeze me till I'm weak. I've been pampered enough, baby! Keep on treatin' me rough."

Fast facts:

According to Miss Allyson, during her first months at MGM, she couldn't afford to buy a car so she traveled to the studio by bus. One day at the bus stop a rather fancy vehicle passed by and Judy Garland waved June in. The two became fast friends and Judy would continue to June to ride with her to work.

"Treat Me Rough" was composed by George Gershwin and the lyrics were written by Ira Gershwin. The song was also used in the original 1930 production of Girl Crazy on Broadway.
