I was probably younger than three when I first became a Crosby fan. While opening presents on my third birthday, my father exclaimed, "Better be a Bing Crosby record or she won't listen to it." This would explain part of my insanity, but I delight in it. There's something gratifying about enjoying the same thing you did over 20 years ago.
I remember one instance when I was 13, when I wrote Nick Clooney an email and asked if Rosemary Clooney was his sister and also said that I was a big fan of the road movies. To my delight, he answered my questions on the air one day during a marathon of his films. I completely fell in love with those movies when I needed them most.
And I can tell you--even now, other than Judy Garland, Bing Crosby has the most tracks in my iTunes playlist. I'm sure it will always be so. There's something about Crosby that can make me mellow in the most stressful moments and I often forget that power he has over my moods.
I think Crosby is completely undervalued as an entertainer. He had more staying power and films under his belt than any other musical star--and almost every film was a big money maker. His easy going persona attracted people by the hoards. I'm so glad his films are being re-released now.
