Waikiki Wedding (1937)

A pineapple company decides to have a contest to name a pineapple girl and bring her to Hawaii in order to write a "first impressions" column, but she hates Hawaii--the idea man on the job then takes it upon himself to change her mind.

The "pineapple girl" (Shirley Ross) is given a black pearl by an unknown source just as she's about to leave the islands. When natives stop her on her way, they believe the pearl is sacred and will make the volcano on the island dormant. The fellow who cooked up the contest rescues the girl in time, but he woos her under false pretenses and cooks up a lot of trouble for himself.

Lines to Remember

Georgia: Oh, everything happens to me in this place and I hate it. I hate it! I want to get out of here tomorrow.
Tony: Well, why don't you go? There's nobody stopping you, are there?
Georgia: No, nobody but the whole Imperial Pineapple Company!
Tony: Why should they stop you?
Georgia: Because I'm their dear little Pineapple Girl, that's why.
Tony: Why, you can't be--
Georgia: Oh! Now I'm a liar.
Tony: No, I don't mean that, but you can't be the...
Georgia: Pineapple Girl--Oh, I wish I could get my hands on that half-witted imbecile that called me that! I'd murder him, that's what I'd do. I'd murder him!
Tony: You would?

Shad: Brother, you're looking at the champion hog caller of Crawford County, Arkansas. Now don't you worry about that pearl. You sit down there and keep your sheet on. You know, I hope you won't think I'm bragging, but there just seems to be something about me that a pig can't resist and I want to tell you from where I come from, we've got some pretty snooty pigs.
