Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935)

A big time producer from a small town is surprised to find his high school sweetheart remembered their old promises and wants to have a part in his show.

Producer Robert Gordon (Robert Taylor) thinks he's sending his old sweetheart home on the afternoon train, under the assumption that she doesn't have the gumption and talent to survive in show business. The gal, Irene Foster (Eleanor Powell) has an ally in Gordon's secretary who sees her dance, and they forge a foreign persona to win Gordon over.

As with most Broadway Melody films, the plot is secondary to the talent which comes in droves headed by Jack Benny's deadpan to Taylor's right hooks.
