I saw Moulin Rouge (the 1952 (2?) version) today. Can't say I really liked it, though. Zsa Zsa Gabor was brilliant, and I liked some aspects of it, but on the whole it didn't enthrall me.

Most recently watched film was this morning at 6:00AM. I watched Once Upon a Honeymoon with Ginger Rogers and Cary Grant. I thought it was great! It should be more known in the world of classics, I don't know why it isn't. It's certainly a patriotic film for us Americans and I know that my mother would have loved it as well if she saw it (most patriotic woman in the world). It was really cute.

I saw Haunted Honeymoon (1940, not the one with Gene Wilder!), a rickety attempt at a mystery/romantic comedy with Bob Montgomery and Constance Cummings. I'm a huge fan of Bob's, but I thought the film was dreadful (if Bob's phoned-in performance is any indication, he thought so too). I almost couldn't finish it. I feel like I'm doing a public service in recommending that you all avoid it.
In sifting through AFI's greatest comedies list, I watched The Court Jester with Danny Kaye, and I really liked it. A lot of critics seem to think that it's his best film...personally, I like The Kid From Brooklyn best... I bought Dancing Lady on DVD to see our hero Fred Astaire in his first film role. It's a routine 42nd Street-ish story, but the amazing cast (Gable, Crawford, Franchot Tone, The Three Stooges, Robert Benchley, Nelson Eddy) gives it a nice lift. The DVD's a keeper. -------------------- Sammy

I saw Thirteen Women for the first time since I was about 13 tonight, so I'm considering it new. I've always called it the worst movie ever made just by how put off I was by it then. I can't really call it that anymore since I laughed harder than I have in weeks at it. Funny stuff. I'll probably watch it again before bed, haha.

As mentioned on a Deanna thread, I got Mad About Music and His Butler's Sister for my birthday.
Didn't ask for many movies this year. I can't wait for the Alice Faye collection to come out. I really need to start keeping better tabs on film releases. It seems like everything I want to buy is coming out next year though. Has anyone else seen anything new recently? -------------------- Linda: We're all grand at seventeen, it's after that the sickness sets in.

Calamity Jane was on this morning. I don't suppose it counts as 'new', as this was approximately the eleventy-fifth time I'd seen it, but I had forgotten how much I love it. It was really the first classic film I got into and watching it gives me the happy squishies.

The wonderful "Seabiscuit" was on TV this afternoon. I didn't watch it today, as I have seen the DVD a couple of times. If you like horse racing then this film is for you. Moving, Sad and Happy

I've watched 4 new Doris Day films in the last 2 weeks "Tea For Two", "On Moonlight Bay", By The Light Of The Silvery Moon" and yesterday "April In Paris".
I thought they were all fantastic especially "Moonlight" and "Silvery Moon" and Doris and Gordon were terrific as Marjorie and Bill as was the rest of the cast. It was a nice pleasant romantic story, the songs were lovely and it was funny too. One of the scenes from "Moonlight" that made me laugh was when Bill thinks that Marjorie's Dad is a drunk who is beating her and her Mum up and throws water over him. Nina -------------------- |

I saw The Shining Hour (1939) with Joan Crawford, Robert Young, Melvyn Douglas and Margaret Sullavan. Crawford's character is married to Douglas (he loves her unrequitedly); she loves his brother, Young, who is married to the uber-saintly Sullavan (she loves him unrequitedly, of course).
I think y'all can guess the rest. Which begs the question: why do these people get married in the first place? We get answers to that burning question by all involved at some point during the film, but they don't make the characters any more sympathetic. As I love each and every one of the four leads, I was looking forward to seeing this. But by the end of it I wanted to line 'em all up and kick 'em in their shins. -------------------- Sammy

It's not really new either, but I watched For the First Time for the second time the other night and was reminded how genuinely I enjoyed the film. I was pleasantly surprised. It was Mario Lanza's last film. He died a few months after it was released.
Makes-a me sad. He had lost weight--not nearly as heavy as in some of his other films. He was so endearing in that film though. It amuses me though, because Nelson Eddy, Howard Keel, and Mario Lanza all seem to be people you either love or you hate. You could love one or two and hate the other and it's just because of small variations in their personalities. They all often played men who used their voice to woo with a bit too much confidence. Howard takes the more "manly" *spew* stance and rarely gives in until it's almost too late. Then there's Mario whose character often softens up and submits. He's a puppy dog. Nelson is about in the middle. He gets shot down and put in his place, but remains an equal. -------------------- Linda: We're all grand at seventeen, it's after that the sickness sets in.

Has anyone seen THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG starring Jennifer Connolly and Ben Kingsley. It was on British BBC TV last night. I wasn't expecting much from the movie, but it was actually rather good. Made in 2003, the film was well received at the time, with both the main stars receiving many nominations throughout the showbiz world for their extraordinary performances. Ben Kingsley really SHONE in his role as a former Iranian citizen caught up in the sale of the mentioned HOUSE

Recently I have been watching "The Thin Man" movies. My Dad bought me the box set last month. I think Asta is the cutest dog I've ever seen! Lately I've really been enjoying Myrna Loy's movies. I have seen "Cheaper By the Dozen" (plan to get the sequel, "Belles on Their Toes", soon after I finish the book of it) and "The Best Years of Our Lives" ('think i got the title right). I cried during "The Best Years of Our Lives" when Myrna's husband in the movie comes home from war. Did anybody else get a little emotional during that scene too?
