The film follows three young women chosen to be Ziegfeld Girls.
The plot focuses heavily on Ziegfeld showgirl Sheila Regan (Lana Turner) who makes all the wrong decisions while trying to use her position practically. The other leads are Susan Gallagher (Judy Garland) who is also picked for Ziegfeld's show as a singer who has to chose between her own career and her long-time act with her father (Charles Winninger) and Sandra Kolter (Hedy Lamarr) who is forced to choose between love and security.
