With wife Betty Jaynes, McPhail was taken on by MGM to be a back-up to Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. In films such as Sweethearts, Babes In Arms, and Little Nellie Kelly, his parts were noticeable athough he and his wife did not seem to posess the height of the magic of Eddy and MacDonald, but the times were changing and operetta was becoming (sadly) passe to the public.
